I like this issue.
So, have a look at pages 9-10. My article on crocheted capelets from Northern Spain. As traditional folk dress for hundreds of years. With the pix from the Hispanic Society collection.
This is fun. Really fun. And special as well for me because my Spanish grandmother taught me to crochet when I was a kid, and she was really good at it. I wrote about it in my opening blog entry way back when.
I loved the process of writing it and doing the research for it. Loved the interviews. Loved going through Ruth Matilda Anderson's photos from 1920s rural Spain, loved reading through catalogs and Hispanic Costume for the research.
She was really remarkable. Tremendously fine and woefully underappreciated photographer. An anthropologist/sociologist documentary photographer, a bit like a Dorothea Lange, only for rural Spain instead of Depression -era "okies." Poetic.
The Hispanic Society, for whom she worked for about 40-50 years, is mounting a show of her photos this fall. If you're in NYC, it would be worth a visit.

Me gusto' todo el proceso de escribir y hacer las investigaciones para este articulo. Tambien era muy especial para mi porque era mi abuela gallega que me ensen~o' a hacer ganchillo cuando yo era nin~a. Escribio' de ella en mi primera entrada en este blog.
Era un gran placer encontrar las fotos de Ruth Matilda Anderson de los an~os 20 de la campan~a de Espan~a. Como fotografo, ella era tremenda. Poeta. Van a poner una exposicion de sus fotos en la Sociedad Hispanica este an~o, asi que si va a venir a NY, venga a verlos.
